Along the River's Edge - Elements

Synopsis:

Sangnam will only date someone under one condition: that they are compatible in bed. This leads to a slew of one-night stands and a bit of a reputation as a playboy. But Sangnam knows what he wants, and he isn’t willing to waste time or settle for someone who can’t keep up with him in bed. After another disappointing one-night stand, Sangnam is attending class as usual, but then his classmate, Daol, comes in. He draws the ire, gossip, and attention of everyone in class for one reason: he is fat. Add to that that he is extremely tall, towering over everyone, and he is impossible to ignore.

Even Sangnam has an issue with Daol, though his is more about Daol being obsessed with him than about his body.

So, Sangnam takes advantage of all the fuss around Daol and confronts him in class. But during this encounter, Sangnam gets his first look at Daol’s face, and he is beautiful. Daol is exactly Sangnam’s type in the face, and he’s determined to mold him to be his perfect partner everywhere else. He makes Daol a deal: follow Sangnam’s diet and exercise plan, and they will definitely have sex. Daol, who has loved Sangnam from afar since first seeing him, is more than happy to go along with this plan. But when all is said and done, will Daol be a failed experiment? Or has Sangnam finally found the one for him?

Review:

I hate to say it, but this art style reminds me a lot of My Egocentric Boss is Obsessed With Me. I wouldn’t say it is as egregious as that, but it definitely has elements that harken back to that… creation. Sangnam could definitely be the cousin of the top from that title. Though, don’t get me wrong, they are really only super similar when there are rough panels. Overall, this has many more pretty panels, but it is just inconsistent. As it goes along, it gets much better, as most stories do, but it’s still a bit inconsistent with some wonky faces, yaoi hands, and weird proportions. When it looks good, though, it looks really good, and I think that’s good enough.

I gotta give credit where credit is due. The smut scenes in this are near-perfection. I’ve been reading a bunch of uncensored titles lately that have led to some disappointing results. This time, we actually have some pretty uncensored penises (yay)! But beyond that, if you are looking for a true size difference BL with a giant top that isn’t a giant (he is human, just a huge human), you will adore this. It is even better that our bottom, former top, Sangnam, is a bulky muscle bottom, so it creates this really fun muscle-on-top-of-bigger-muscles dynamic. And our top, our giant, muscly man Daol, is a crybaby in bed (from pleasure, not just because he is a sensitive teddy bear), and he squirts. Having a top cry and squirt is so rare, and I was pumped to see it. I know I am getting in the weeds on the smut for this one, but it is some of the best I’ve seen in a long time.

I mean, their first time together includes Daol absolutely ravishing Sangnam. He eats, sucks, licks, and bites, and I love every bit of it. Then, the second time they are intimate, Daol takes control, and it is a masterful domination by a new power bottom. As far as smut is concerned, there truly isn’t much better than this. The dynamics are unique, the sizes are scrumptious, and while the art isn’t perfect across the story, the artist took a lot of time and care crafting the scenes that really count in these smutty morsels. These scenes truly blow me away, and I think this title is worth reading for them alone.

However, I would be doing this review a disservice if I didn’t at least touch on the story itself. At only 23 episodes, there isn’t much to talk about, and I think that is actually to this title’s benefit. I will say, though, this goes in hard on the fatphobia, so if you are sensitive to that, I can’t express enough how much you need to avoid this one. Beyond that, though, there is a training arc where Daol exercises, diets, and ultimately loses weight, then there is an arc where the two struggle to express their feelings, Daol due to his self-esteem issues and Sangnam because of his pride, which leads to silly misunderstandings, but this is generally packed full of very sweet or very sexy moments. This ended quickly, but it didn’t feel terribly abrupt. It didn’t try to do too much in the short time it had, and clearly made the most important aspect (the smut) the highest-quality portion. It is great, and after reading a lot of shorts lately that overreached and rushed to an unsatisfying ending, this was a breath of fresh air.

I loved this. Truly. It isn’t perfect art-wise, and it hardly had a story, but that’s fine. It knows what it is intended to be, which is a smutfest, and it does that exceptionally well. Add in the nice, humorous, and fluffy bits, and this is a great short. I would even say it is a favorite (mainly because the smut is so good, to be real). The author’s note mentions possible side stories, but it is listed as complete for now, so I’ve reviewed it as it is. If it does come back for more, you won’t hear me complain, and I’ll be sure to update the tags and content warnings when applicable. I highly recommend this.
