Along the River's Edge - Elements

Synopsis:

Geonwoo has zero experience. He is a virgin, but being in college, surrounded by other men who love nothing more than talking about their sexual exploits, he is compelled to talk a much bigger game than he has. To Geonwoo’s surprise, others are listening, particularly Haneul. He’s a college student, too, but he is on his way to becoming an idol, and he is beyond beautiful. Geonwoo is totally open to sleeping with a man, especially someone like Haneul, and he has no intention of saying no when Haneul makes the offer. How many people can say they lost their virginity with someone like Haneul?

So, naively, Geonwoo follows Haneul back to his apartment. What he doesn’t expect to find there is another man.

And he definitely didn’t expect to be the designated bottom between the two of them. But as he gets swept up in all the heat and passion, that’s exactly what he ends up doing. And when all is said and done (and his virginity is long gone), Geonwoo learns that these two men, Haneul and Jiho, are looking for someone to join them in a threesome fuck buddy situation. Only hours ago, Geonwoo was an innocent virgin, and now he is being offered a chance to be in the middle of a casual throuple. What is happening? And what is he going to do?

Review:

The art isn’t bad, but I wouldn’t call it great. There are some really awkward bodies, particularly with body proportions. There are some very long, flexible necks, for example. The faces also look a little wonky from time to time. It certainly isn’t perfect by any means, so if that is something you need in your BL, then you are not going to enjoy this. It is perfectly serviceable, though, and I have to appreciate how nice the penises look because I have seen some unfortunate ones in uncensored titles lately. Don’t let my pickiness dissuade you because there is a lot to enjoy in this one beyond the art.

While the art isn’t always perfect, what I do love is the entire story and our cast of characters. Let’s start off with something that is obvious if you’ve been around and read a lot of my reviews in the past: I adore Geonwoo. Why? He is so stupid. I love a dumb man being swept up by his lover (or in this case, lovers). Hyesung (Love is an Illusion!), Hyun (The Devil’s Temptation), and Seon-woo (Punch Drunk Love) are now joined in my dumb man pantheon by Geonwoo. If you hate the dumb bottom stereotype, then there is nothing for you in this series because Geonwoo is as dumb as they come, and I live for it.

Something else I adore about this series is that the tops aren’t solely focused on Geonwoo. Of course, as the new third and only bottom in the trio, he is the focus of the story, but their relationship started because of a mutual attraction they have for each other. They were attracted to each other, weren’t willing to bottom for one another, but were willing to stick together until they found the perfect bottom for them to share. They openly kiss (and do other things) with each other, which, even in some of the poly titles I’ve read, doesn’t really happen. Usually, it is the bottom getting all of the love, and that’s it. It is so nice having the tops engaging with each other, even if it doesn’t evolve into a vers situation. We also get to see very different tops. Haneul, the smaller top, is a soft sadomasochist type, while Jiho is the stoic but generous lover. The smut in this just has so much to enjoy, and, as if that wasn’t great enough, it is uncensored. I love it.

Now, with all of this goodness being said, it is worth mentioning that story-wise, this isn’t anything magnificent. It is very dry on the story side, to be honest. This is meant to be a short smutfest, and it delivers in every aspect on that front. But I know there are some folks out there who want some story, and this just isn’t the work for them. I like deep narratives, but I love it when a work doesn’t try to overextend itself. There are so many smutty morsels that do everything they can to shoehorn the most halfhearted stories in there to get some kind of narrative substance, only to ruin what could’ve been a fine smutfest. This doesn’t try to do that. It is intended to be a short sexy time, and that is it, and it is all the better for it.

I gotta say, this was unexpectedly a favorite for me. I love it. It is super short, doesn’t try to do too much, and is replete with a unique poly relationship we don’t usually get to see. Throw in a dumb bottom, and this was impossible not to love as far as I’m concerned. It isn’t perfect, and I am sure there are plenty of people who would dislike it for the very reasons I love it, but that is why I go into such detail in these reviews. Not everything I like or dislike will align with everyone who reads this review, but I hope sharing those feelings openly and honestly will help guide people to find works they love or avoid things they won’t. I loved this, and I highly recommend it.
